Cloe Teresa Garrison, beloved wife and mother, passed away at the age of 82 on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, from complications of a severe stroke suffered on November 28, 2009.

Cloe was born in Prosser, Washington, on March 5, 1927, the seventh child of John and Elizabeth Throckmorton. She moved as an infant with her family to Port Angeles, Washington, where she spent her early years. The family lived in an old farm house in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains where Cloe and her siblings attended a two-room country school. Cloe attended junior high school in Port Angeles schools, and her freshman year of high school in Othello. In 1942 Cloe and her sisters moved to Grandview, where she met her future husband Roger, and graduated from high school in 1945.

Cloe was a lady of considerable talents and interests. She loved music, a passion she passed along to her children. As a teenager she played bugle in the Port Angeles Junior Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and later in Grandview, played trumpet in the Grandview High School band and the french horn in the orchestra, and appeared in many school plays. When the family moved to Sunnyside in 1954 after her husband's college years, she, together with the late Betty Salvini, organized the Sunnyside Junior Women's Club, which flourished for many years in the community. She used her artistic talents to paint many beautiful ceramic pieces which are a priceless heritage to her children. Her talents in the kitchen, especially in the pie making arts, are legendary in the family and she loved to pass on her knowledge. Cloe loved to travel in their 5th wheel, and she and her husband crisscrossed the country seeing the sights and documenting family history and heritage. Cloe made life-long friends through her bridge clubs and other community organizations.

Cloe was very active in the community, a devout Democrat, and a tireless volunteer on many political committees. She was the 4th Congressional District Democratic Vice Chairman for two terms, and was heavily involved in the campaigns of President John F. Kennedy and Governor Albert Rosellini as well as many others. Cloe had a particular passion for libraries, and served for nearly 20 years on the Sunnyside Library Board and was Chairman of the Yakima Regional Library Board for two terms. She was appointed by Governor Dan Evans to the Washington State Library Commission representing the rural residents of Washington.

Cloe was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She gave selflessly of her time and energy to her family, friends and community.

Cloe is survived by her husband of 62 years, Roger K. Garrison; her daughters Cathrine M. Smith and son-in-law Ron of Redmond; Carolyn Williams and son-in-law Robert of Portland; and Christine Garrison of Kirkland; and two sons, Douglas Garrison of Sunnyside and Paul Garrison and daughter-in-law Kathi of Colville. Cloe was blessed with seven grandchildren, Rachel, Steven, and Jason Smith, Christine Jones, and Christopher, Casey, and Jacob Garrison; and five great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jackson Jones, Gabrielle Smith, and Rylee Jo and Austin Garrison. Cloe is also survived by two sisters, Irma Loomis of Aberdeen and Ethel Evenson of Cosmopolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son John A Garrison in 2008; her four brothers, Harold (William Harold Throckmorton), Claude, Clyde, and Wayne Throckmorton, as well as one sister, Merle Alexander.

Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday January 8, 2009, at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. In accordance with her fervent wishes, her remains will be cremated.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grandview, Washington on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Memorials may be made to your personal favorite charity in her honor or to the Seattle Children's Hospital Guild Association (support group for the Children's Orthopedic Hospital of Seattle) of which Cloe was a 50 year member.
