She was the daughter of Garabed Achikbashian of Arapkir, Turkey in the Ottoman Empire, perhaps born around 1860. Her brother was Aram Achekbashian, a notable Ottoman-Armenian politician who was executed during the Armenian Genocide of 1915. She married Garabed Javian. Shortly after 1900 they moved from Arapkir to Sivas. Garabed died around 1909/10 of a stroke and a daughter Maritza died of pneumonia at about age 6. In 1915 during the Armenian Genocide Hajigul was deported with five of her children. Her two oldest sons Armen and Roupen had been sent to Hajigul's brother Sooren in the United States prior to the genocide to avoid the Turkish draft. The remaining children oldest to youngest were Haig, Hripseme, Aghavney, Vartan, and Stepan and they were all forced to walk until Hajigul was too weak to go on. She told her children to continue on and save themselves, so they continued without her and she presumably died shortly after. Out of the five children on the death march, only Vartan survived.
