George Bennett, a son of George and Mary Bennett, was born in Bermondsey according to the 1841 census, was an engineer and tanner, latterly a Traveller for Reynolds & Sons, Tanners, of Warrington. On 1 June 1840 at Newington in Surrey he married Martha Marshall. They had five children:
