Edward James Gay Jr. passed away on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008. He was 98, born Oct. 13, 1910. He was the first son of Sen. Edward J. Gay Sr. and Gladys Fenner Gay, who preceded him in death. Also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Zola Tandberg Gay; two brothers, Charles Fenner Gay and Andrew Price Gay; and a sister, Carolyn Gay Labouisse. He is survived by two sons and a sister. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He had private tutoring at St. Louis Plantation, Plaquemine, prior to attending Woodbury Forest in Orange, Va. He graduated from Princeton University in 1933 and from Tulane School of Law in 1936. While at Tulane, he was a member of the Law Review. He served in World War II as a U.S. Army captain, serving with the Corps of Engineers in Galveston and San Francisco.
In addition to practicing law, he was an agent with John Hancock Insurance, a trust officer with Capital Bank & Trust, Baton Rouge, and a teacher of insurance law at Southern University in Baton Rouge. He was past president of the A. C. Lewis YMCA and was the "Man of the Year" for the Baton Rouge Underwriters Association and the Louisiana Association of Life Underwriters. He was a former chairman of the board of the Salvation Army of Baton Rouge. For most of his adult life, he served as an officer and director of the Edward J. Gay Planting & Manufacturing Co. Inc., Plaquemine.
