Lewis, born in 1902 was the son of Frank Cole Babbitt, a distinguised professor of classical studies at Trinity College, Hartford, CT for many years, and his wife, Ethel (Hall) Babbitt. Ethel was very active in the social events at the school. (a typical college professor's wife of the times)
When he was 2 years old, Lewis contracted malaria (in Hartford, no less!) which caused him to suffer total deafness for the rest of his life. He became very proficient at lip reading and sign language. He married Corinne Howe of Minnesota. Lewis and Corinne lived for many years on a farm he inherited in Peters_ham, MA. He was a herpetologist.
Lewis died suddenly of a massive heart attack at the wheel of his car while driving through Vermont. His wife Corinne, grabbed the wheel and brought the car to a safe stop but Lewis was by now dead. They are both interred at Old Centre Cemetery in Peters_ham, MA.

Other members of this Babbitt family are interred at the Bridgewater (CT) Center Cemetery and their interesting biographies may be found at "FindaGrave".
