Evan Henry Cowan, 21, of Kansas City, Kansas, died Nov. 2, 2016. He was born September 5, 1995, in Kansas City, MO. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Stacey and Mark Gates, Kansas City, KS; his father, Ty Cowan, Kansas City, KS; a sister, Cassandra Dawn Leone, North Kansas City, MO; stepbrother and stepsister, Ian and Mia Gates, Kansas City, KS; maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Ruth Ann and Jon Grote, Centerview, MO; step-grandmother, Connie Keck, Odessa, MO; paternal grandfather and grandmother, Mike and Sharon Cowan, Higginsville, MO; aunts; uncles and many cousins, including his best friend and cousin, Chance Joyner, Warrensburg, MO. Preceding him in death were his paternal grandmother, Sami Cowan and maternal grandfather, Gary Keck. Evan was a Boy Scout and a former member of EDUCATE. He graduated cum laude from Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, where he tutored other students. Additionally, he earned an International Baccalaureate diploma, with the second-highest score in his class. He completed two successive summer internships at Hoglund Brain Imaging Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln on an academic scholarship. He was passionate about helping others, promoting justice and human rights, and protecting the environment. His contributions to the Kansas City community included volunteering for Harvesters and donating blood on a regular basis. He loved studying cosmology, listening to music, making charcoal drawings and writing stories. His lifelong passion was reading. In lieu of flowers, Stacey and her family asks that you make donations to Harvesters and Ty and his family asks that you make donations to Uplift Organization, Inc.
