Notorious for divorcing his wife, Lady Mary Campbell, in 1850 - which at the time required an act of Parliament. In 1847 he declared bankruptcy, forcing the liquidation of the contents of his seat at Stowe House.
He had two children with Lady Mary, daughter Lady Anna Eliza Mary Gore-Langton, the ancestress of the Earls Temple of Stowe (this was a subsidiary title of the Dukedom, made with a special remainder to Lady Anna and her heirs male); and a son Richard Plantagenet Campbell, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1823-1889).
The middle name "Plantagenet" is in reference to the fact that the Duke had royal ancestry through his mother, who was heir-general to Lady Catherine Grey, younger sister of Lady Jane Grey the "Nine-Days Queen."
