Dr. Jean E. Attebury, 68, of Topeka, passed away May 20, 2017. She was born March 5, 1949 in Sedalia, Missouri to Loren and Emma Jean (Harbit) Attebury. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and a sister, Loretta Attebury Ortiz.

Survivors include a sister Ruth Williams (Kent) of Peabody, Kansas, a niece Blair Williams of Lubbock, Texas, a nephew Blaid Williams of Newton, Kansas and a brother-in-law Dariel Ortiz of Topeka, Kansas.

Jean graduated from West Smith County High School in Kensington, Kansas in 1967 and then from Washburn University where she obtained a Bachelors of Education in 1971. She completed her Masters of Arts in English Education in 1976 and Ph.D. in American Studies in 2000, both from the University of Kansas.

She began her teaching career at Holliday Junior High, moved to Topeka High School for several years, and served in other USD 501 schools. Most recently she taught sixth grade at Landon Middle School, retiring from USD 501 in 2011. She was also an Adjunct Instructor in English at Washburn University for nearly 35 years. Additionally, she taught American History at Washburn University, American History/Studies and Western Civilization at the University of Kansas, Business Writing at Baker University, and History at Shawnee Country Day School.

Jean was an avid reader, sports enthusiast, community advocate, and deeply involved in her church. She impacted many lives through her teaching, often welcoming the children of former students to her classroom.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 30th at 10:00am at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th St., Topeka. A reception will follow the service in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th St, Topeka, KS, 66604; KU Libraries Enrichment, 1425 Jayhawk Blvd., Lawrence, KS 66045; Washburn Alumni Association and Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar, Topeka, KS 66604 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
