Gerdi was born Gerda Kluge in the German province of Silesia on September 25, 1924. She was the youngest of three children born to Ernst(d. 1931) and Selma (Ludewig) Kluge. She joined her older siblings Walter and Ellen.
Gerda spent the war years near home while Walter served in the military and Ellen worked in different cities. When the family fled their home in 1945, Gerdi boarded the wrong truck and was taken prisoner by the Russians. Desperate to be re-united with her mother and sister, Gerdi arrived in Bamberg, Germany to be with them, just prior to Selma's death in January, 1946.
While Ellen married and came to the US, Gerdi remained in Germany. In 1953, she married Hans Beckstein. Ellen sponsored Hans and Gerdi to come to the US, arriving February 13, 1954. They settled in Modesto. Gerdi kept house and worked waiting tables in Ellen's restaurants, "The Office Lounge," and "The King's Bench" in Modesto. She was a member of the Order of Die Hermann Söhne German Lodge. Gerdi enjoyed Hans' piano playing, baking, driving in his classic El Camino, or playing with their beloved German Shepard, Senta. Hans passed in 1981. Gerdi spent her remaining years living with Ellen. They remained devoted sisters until Ellen's death on December 28, 2016.
Surviving Gerdi are her nephews Viktor (Herma) and Hans Joachim (Christinae) Kluge of Germany and her cousins Barbara Ciuffo, her primary caregiver, and Karin Richardson. Gerdi leaves her closest friend of 64 years, Margaret Shields. Besides her parents, husband, and sister, Gerdi is preceded by her brother Walter (Charlotte) Kluge, her Brother-in-law Dale Miner, her Aunt Charlotte Sussenbach and her dear friends Gretel Dzierla and Margunde (Edmund) Robinson, Maria Duester, and Richard Shields.
Please join us in celebrating Gerdi's life on Saturday July 22, 2017 at 2:00pm at the club house of the McHenry Mobile Manor located at 4125 McHenry Ave, Modesto. Eaton Family Funeral Home oversees arrangements.
As she prepares to make her heavenly arrival, and always protecting her sister, Ellen makes plans Gerdi arrives safely. As she arrives to her to see her departed loved ones, she sees Ellen's welcoming smile, and you can almost hear Ellen say, "My God Gerdi, I'm always waiting too long for you!" Our lost little hummingbird is now free, Ruhe in Frieden Liebe Gerdi.
