Gladys was born on June 20th, 1925 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Edward and Viola (Schuette) Stanzel. She was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1943. On September 28th, 1946 Gladys was united in marriage to Joseph Kersten at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1987.
Gladys and her husband owned and operated Kersten Paint Store. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, reading, and being around family and friends. Gladys was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons and one daughter-in-law: Dick Kersten (special friend Chris), Kellnersville; Jim (Jill) Kersten, Manitowoc; Robert Kersten, Manitowoc; two daughters and two sons-in-law: Judy (Tom) Vnuk, Manitowoc; Kathy (Larry) Kaminski, Ohio; nine grandchildren: Ross; Ryan (Missy); Sara; Heidi (special friend Kevin); Kerry; Kim; Jason; Joey (special friend Danni); Cydney (Kenny); nine great grandchildren: Zachary; Lilly; Lucia; Levi; Axel; Taylor; Alicia; Ashlen; Emily; Tanner; Chase; one great great grandchild: Jax; one sister: Dorothy Wilhelm, Manitowoc; Nieces, nephews other relatives and friends also survive.
Gladys is preceded in death by her parents: Edward and Viola (Schuette) Stanzel; her husband: Joseph Kersten; one brother: Edward Stanzel, Jr.; one sister: Lucille (Howard) Lindgren; three sisters-in-law: Marie (Matt) Schlehlein; Veronica (Al) Berg; Elsie Kersten; and three brothers-in-law: Kenneth Wilhelm; Ray (Doris) Kersten; Larry (Hazel) Kersten.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall (1114 S. 21st Street). Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with burial to take place at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc immediately following services.
