He was born April 4, 1937, in Star City, West Virginia, to parents Jesse Ray and Goldie Ethel (Boyce) Austin. Charlie was the youngest of eight children. He fell in love with country music at a young age and was known as "Pee Wee Austin" when he was performing all the way up to his induction in the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2012.
Charlie, also known as Al to his coworkers, retired from the General Motors Chevy Plant in Cleveland after 37 years of employment. He was a 40 year member of Parkside Lodge #736 F&AM in Brooklyn, Ohio, and a member of the Parma Moose Lodge.
Family and music were always priorities in Charlie's life. He enjoyed family gatherings and camping. Most of the time, those activities would focus on his music. He began playing at the Sagebrush Roundup at age 7 and recently could be found on most Thursday nights playing at Curbside Coffee in Cleveland.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Gladys (Cowger) Austin, and his children: Anita (Jim) Valentine of Fairmont, WV, Alfred "Chuck" (Gwen) Austin of Edinburg, Cherie (Chuck) Lee of Shalersville, and Loretta (fiancé Roy Benningfield) Moyer of Nottingham, PA, as well as mother-in-law Lenora Cowger. Pap's memory will also be cherished by his 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way, along with many generations of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Floyd Cowger, and his siblings: Harold, Paul, Ray, Margie, Madeline, June, and Emma Jean.
