Samuel Register was born Jan 6, 1852, the son of Guilford Register and Priscilla Ann DeVane. He was drowned in the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the Suwannee River. He was caught in a storm as he was hauling salt in a boat, probably from Cedar Key. The last that was seen of him, he was throwing sacks of salt overboard. He died Sep. 29, 1896, when his boat capsized. "Registers and Our Kin" by Lamar Wells

This would be the "Hurricane of 1896", "Disaster At Dawn - The Cedar Keys Hurricane of 1896", by Alvin F. Oickle. Cedar Key was originally on the Island called "Atsena Otie", which can be seen from the gulf side of what is Cedar Key today. The hurricane literally wiped out "Cedar Key" and the settlers rebuilt on the island Cedar Key is located on today.
