James Madison Wright was born on April 22, 1905 in Jackson County, Tennessee, the son of William Dillon "Bill" Wright (1854–1942) and Eliza Jane (Heady) Wright (1866–1936). His parents were married on November 6, 1882 in Jackson County.

James was married on November 12, 1927 in Sumner County as the 1st husband of Mattie Ann (Dixon) (Wright) Kennedy (1910-1990).

A farmer living in rural Hendersonville, he was 41 years old, married and had pulmonary TB when he died at home on February 3, 1947 of rheumatic heart disease.

Survivors included his wife, two unmarried daughters, three sons, brother Andrew Wright and sister Mrs G O Christian.

Funeral Services were held at his home, and burial was on February 4th in Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison [city, not county].
