Elsie Louise Baldoni, 93, formerly of Mishawaka, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 with her loving family present.

Elsie was born on November 29, 1923 in Mishawaka to Charles and Anna (Gerovich) Kopsea. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary (Ed) Norris, Anna (Joe) Ray, Helen Kopsea, Magdalyn “Tags” (Richard) Ball and Margaret (James) Gormeley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael, John (Florence) and Charles (Anne) Kopsea; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Libero (Lucille) Baldoni.

On October 11, 1947 Elsie married Louis Baldoni in St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mishawaka. Louie preceded her in death on January 7, 2017 after 69 years of marriage. Surviving are her children, Gregory Baldoni of Mishawaka, Pia Baldoni of Mishawaka and Rulan (Jay) Asdell of South Bend; and her two grandchildren, Patrick (Nicole) Asdell and Elizabeth Asdell.

Elsie was a lifetime resident of the area. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1942 and was class Secretary. She was a very talented athlete who played on local softball teams and was invited to try out for the Blue Socks traveling team of the American Women’s League. Later, she enjoyed being a member of several bowling teams and brought home many trophies.

She worked at Bendix after graduating from high school and supported the war effort. She also worked at Ball Band and Shillings. After she married and had her children, Elsie went to school and became a licensed cosmetologist. She operated Elsie’s Beauty Shop in the basement of her home on Eighth Street for many years.

When her husband Louie retired from the Mishawaka Fire Department, they owned and operated Louie’s Tavern and Restaurant for 10 years. Not one to be idle, she took up tap dancing at age 70 and performed with the Battell Toe Tappers for several years which brought her a lot of joy and comradery with her fellow tappers.

Elsie was very involved in the Mishawaka community. She was Vice Chairwoman of the Mishawaka Democratic Party and was instrumental in helping with many Democratic campaigns. She was a member of the Mishawaka Commission on the Status of Women and the Mishawaka-Penn Township Democratic Women’s Club. Elsie was also a member and officer of the DeAmici Club Auxiliary and helped organize numerous card parties and fundraising events. In addition, she was a member of the VFW Post 360 Ladies Auxiliary, the local chapter of the Northern Indiana Children’s Hospital for Developmental Disabilities, Indiana Tavern Owners Association, MHS Alumni and St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Elsie was a very kind and considerate woman who generously gave her time and help to anyone who needed her, often without them knowing it. Her greatest joy was taking care of her family, friends and even strangers. She was happiest in the kitchen and was known for her culinary skills. She was also very skilled at cross-stitch. In both cases, she took great pleasure in giving away her final results.

The family would like to thank the many people who were involved in Mom’s care – Diana Newport; Bonnie Buechler and Senior1 Care; and Heartland Hospice.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 4 PM to 8 PM in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka.
