Dorr's middle name, is in honor of his maternal great-grandfather, David Smith, a soldier of the American Revolution and an early settler and farmer in Windham County VT, where Dorr's parents, Ellen Howard and Roswell Cobb were born and raised. They were industrious and successful people; about 1860 his family sold their farm in Jamaica in Windham County, and bought a new place nearby in the town of Chester, Windsor County VT. At the age of 13 years, 10 months and 26 days, Dorr died 18 hours after a shooting accident with a gun. The Cobb family left Chester a few years after Dorr's death.

His seven siblings were: Daniel, Myra, Horace, Charles, Fred, William and Alice.
