Thomas was born in Manchester, England, and immigrated to the USA in 1890 with his parents and two sisters, settling in Newark, NJ. By 1910, Tom was a telephone lineman. Enlisted 12 Feb 1908 w/15th US Cavalry for 3 yrs. By 1917 was a lineman with Western Union Telegraph, NYC. Served w/US Infantry 18 Jul 1919 - 30 Jan 1920 w/308th Guard & Fire Co; 28 May 1920 - 12 Feb 1921 w/13th Co Signal Corps; 13 Feb 1921 - 28 Dec 1921 w/9th Co Signal Corps, discharged as Cpl. Admitted to US National Home for Disabled Soldiers (Los Angeles) 4 Feb 1922 discharged 28 Jun 1922. By 1930, was Peace Officer w/ Police Dept; was Patrolman 20 and Special 19 w/city of Venice (CA)Police Dept; Inspector 1 w/Santa Monica (CA) Fire Dept.
