Douglas Mathias Bieri (he was named after General Douglas MacArthur and after his father Mathias Benrat Bieri) was born at 4.30pm on Monday 18 August 1947, in the Trinity Hospital, Minot, North Dakota.

He lived in the small village of Blaisdell, North Dakota, 40 miles West of Minot, with his parents and 3 siblings, for 2 years (1 and 2 years old).

In July 1949 the family migrated west to Lewistown, Montana and he lived there for 2 years. (3 and 4 years old).

In June 1951 the family again migrated to Helena, Montana. His father was the Managing Director, for many years, of the Eck Oil Company. His mother taught grade school at Montana City and later at the May Butler School.

Doug attended Jefferson Grade School from Kindergarten to year 5 and then completed year 6 at Central School. He completed his high school at Helena Senior High School in 1965.

He was confirmed at St John's Lutheran Church and was a member of the Luther League there.

He was active in high school activities and graduated near the top of his class. In his last year at high school he was also a Page in the Montana State Senate in the Capitol Building.

He enrolled in the U. of Montana in 1965 initially studying law and later changing to history and English. He graduated in 1969 w/ a BA degree w/ a Diploma of Education. He taught for a short while and then went into retail trading where he developed a successful business under the name of "Rish-a'shay" dealing w/ clothing & jewelry. The complex was expanded to include a restaurant and movie theatre. He also formed another company, Montana Consolidated Gems. During this time he lived in a uniquely designed Alpine House in the Jocko Valley near Missoula.

In the early 1990's he married Cathy Baldwin and they moved to Mexico City where he was the Social Science Master in the largest English speaking school in Central America. In 1983, his only child, Pilar, was born there.

In 1985 he was completing an MA degree and was preparing to take up a position in an International School in Paris when he contracted Hepatitis C and returned to his wife's family in Kansas City for medical treatment where he had one of the first liver transplants in the region.

After recovering he became accredited to teach in Kansas and Missouri where he taught part-time and also became a travel consultant.

In 1995 his health began to fail and he had to have a second liver transplant. His last two years were spent on Kauai Island, Hawaii. Ultimately, the second liver transplant failed and he slipped in a coma and died in Hawaii on 1 December 1998. 

His ashes were spread off the beach in Hawaii and at the base of Mount Ascencion in Helena where he played as a young boy and frequently returned to as a young man.

He was pre-deceased by two sisters: Margaret Agnes who died as an infant in April 1945; Linda Rae who died on 17 May 1955 at St John’s Hospital in Helena from a cancerous tumor on the brain.

He is survived by his daughter, Pilar, who lives in Kansas, City, Missouri; his brother, Dan, who resides in Sydney, NSW, Australia and his sister, Mary Lou (Bieri) Johnson who resides in Seattle, Washington.

His warm smile and charismatic personality will be sadly missed by all.
