My dad was the son of Thomas Joseph Hebert, born in St David,d'Yamaska,Quebec,Canada and Alexina Marie (Matteau) Hebert, born in St Cajetan d'Armagh,Bellechasse,Quebec, Canada. Dad was the fifth child of six born to Thomas and Alexina. His brothers and sisters were: Joseph "Joe" born 1918, Rita, born 1919, Gert, born 1920, Yvonne, born 1922, dad, born 4 Sept 1924 and Leon, born 1925. He lived all his life in West Warwick,Rhode Island except when he served in World War II. During the war,dad fought in New Guinea, the Philippines and later was part of the occupied force in Osaka,Japan after Japan surrendered. He served with the 544th Amphibious & Shore Regiment and received the Bronze Star. Upon his return to the states,he married Doris Evelyn Hanks, and had two children,Susan born in 1950 and Michael born in 1957. My father was a warm and caring person and loved to make people laugh, (especially with his practical jokes!) Actually,he and his younger brother,Leon, were infamous for this! I will always remember my dad going to work carrying his lunch pail with him and his molasses sandwiches. My father gave me my gift of faith by making certain my brother and I were in church on Sunday mornings. He didn't send us, he went with us, and for this I will be eternally thankful. Dad was a Little League coach for 14 years and the kids loved him. Even years later, these grown men would recognize dad and thank him for his dedication. SPORTS FREAK.......that's what we used to call him! Naturally dad LOVED the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox and would NEVER miss a game. Those were his favorites but he loved all the teams.
My crazy, fun loving dad also used to make the sound of crows. We would be out somewhere and he'd get to "crowing." Not real loud, but we knew he was doing it. As a matter of fact, dad did this about two weeks before he passed at the nursing home. There was a woman there who was always getting upset and causing others to feel uncomfortable. He got so upset with her he told her to BE QUIET and added " caw caw....." My father LOVED to travel! Car trips were planned for us every August. We went to Gettysburg Battlefields and Nova Scotia, two of many vacations. Now on a much saddened note, after twenty years of marriage,my mother left my father. Dad had no idea this was coming, neither did my brother or me. This just about killed him. It was one of those really ugly divorces you see in the movies, except for us it was real. Anyway, years later, dad met a lovely lady named Esther Simas and they fell in love and were married. Esther had been a nurse and was able to take such good care of dad at the end of his life. I thank God for her. One of my best memories goes back to 2000. My husband and I were planning a trip to Europe and we decided to take my dad. Dad had always wanted to see Europe but never had. Off we went in August of 2000 and flying first class♥ We went to Paris, took trains to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and then on to Venice,Italy. It was magical and my dad talked about that trip for the rest of his life. I will be forever grateful we were given that opportunity.♥
