Originally sent by his parents to Cologne to study business, though he had shown artistic talent from an early age, he was kicked out of school for drawing caricatures. His parents then decided to allow him to study art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, under Carl Ferdinand Sohn und Wilhelm von Schadow from 1839 to 1845. He then spent time in an artist's colony in Rome, before retuning to Germany. He spent time in Berlin and Dresden . He was mostly known as a painter of religious art for many churches (and also worked in stained glass) but also painted portraits, one of the best known of which was a portrait of Wilhelm Grimm (the collector of folk stories), who was a family friend. Upon the death of his mother in 1881, he returned to the family estate in Sinzig. He also was involved with the Medical Corps in the wars of 1866 and 1870-1871, for which he was honored by Austria, Saxony, and Prussia
