James A. Smith (1914 - 2010), was born in Key, Ohio on 20 December 1914 and located to Canton, Ohio in 1945, after serving in the United States Navy during World War II. During his military service, Jim was stationed in various areas of the Pacific Theater, including on replenishment oilers, and in Papua New Guinea. While he worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad before the war, it was during his period on the railroad that he met Vivian Madeline Miller (1922 - 1999), who was to become his wife of sixty-one years. During his long life in Canton, Jim would eventually retire in 1980 from the Timken Company, after thirty-four years of service. While he was a member of the William McKinley Masonic Lodge No. 431 F. & A.M., both Jim and his wife where among the founding members of Canton Baptist Temple, where they remained consistent parishioners for nearly five decades. Among his many hobbies was a Popular Mechanic's approach to electronics that saw him remaining on the cutting edge of technology. His other enjoyments came from NASCAR, reading Westerns, and remaining interested in trains and locomotives.
