A distinguished alumnus of Washington & Lee University and Columbia P&S, Robert started his career at Minneapolis General Hospital. He then entered the Army as a captain in the Medical Corps at the start of the US presence in Indochina. In private practice, he became a pioneer and expert in Methadone Maintenance and Substance Abuse and in 1968 started Minnesota's first methadone clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital. He became Medical Director of the Substance Abuse program at Bellevue-NYU. In his 30-year tenure at NYU, he helped secure Bellevue's reputation for excellence in the field. After years of data collection, he coauthored a ground-breaking paper on methadone's effects on cardiomyopathy. He was a special friend of author, Kurt Vonnegut, and beloved by all who knew him.
