MAX -- Phyllis Jean Rickard, of Max, died Monday (March 5, 2007), at the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman at the age of 76.

She was born June 16, 1930, at Trenton, to Claude and Susie (Newport) Adamson, and spent her early years on a farm southwest of Trenton. After graduating from Trenton High School, Phyllis continued her education at McCook College and Kearney State College.

On Sept.14, 1952, Phyllis was united in marriage to Derald Lee Rickard at Benkelman and they made their home on a farm southeast of Max.

Phyllis was an elementary teacher and taught for more than 44 years, the last 23 as a first grade teacher at Benkelman Elementary.

Anyone who knew Phyllis, knew of her love for animals. She also enjoyed horseback riding until arthritis made it difficult for her.

Her other interests included reading and gardening. She loved to travel and visited Europe on several tours, as well as parts of Africa and Hawaii. More recently, she and her family spent a fun-filled week on a cruise in the Caribbean.

She was a member of the National and Nebraska Education Associations and the Max United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Claude and Susie Adamson; and her brothers, Richard Adamson and B. Nolan Adamson.

Those who survive her include her husband of more than 54 years, Derald Rickard of Max; her Pomeranian, Skippy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m. (MST) at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with Rev. Brian Fong officiating. Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.
