Marcia Ruth Bobal (née Schmid), age 65, passed away suddenly on December 23, 2016 while in Ankara, Turkey to celebrate her son Michael’s wedding to İpek (Kaymak) Bobal. The week before her unforeseen death was a happy one, which included spending time with the Kaymak family (with whom she got along famously), visiting a museum in the old city part of Ankara with her husband Mike and daughter Christine, and celebrating the upcoming nuptials with a traditional Turkish “henna night.” That week of family happiness and togetherness is a treasured memory.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Marcia was the beloved daughter of Helen Roberta “Bobbie” Schmid and the late Norman Eugene Schmid. She was predeceased by her brother John and is survived by brothers Norman Jr., Richard (Mary), and Thomas (Kelly); aunt Dorothy Young; uncle George “Bill” Burrows (Norma); and many other friends and family members.

Marcia was born in Illinois, and as a child lived in Nebraska, Michigan, and Ohio. She graduated in the Class of 1969 from Bay High School in Bay Village, OH. Always academically gifted, she earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the Ohio State University and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Dayton. At UD, she met Mike, who would be her husband of 41 years. Marcia and Mike moved to northern Virginia in 1979, where Christine and Michael were born and raised. From 1990-1993, the family lived in Paris, France, allowing Marcia to make use of the French language ability she developed in her school days.

Always an avid traveler, Marcia and her family took advantage of those three years abroad to explore western Europe. Even after returning to the U.S., Marcia never stopped traveling. In recent years, she had visited many sites at home (New Mexico; New Orleans, Louisiana; Charleston, South Carolina) and abroad (Nicosia, Cyprus; Budapest, Hungary; Sydney, Australia; many trips around Turkey). She loved to travel with Mike or her longtime friend Judy Supernaw.

Marcia worked for years at Nottingham Elementary School, where her children attended. Starting as a substitute teacher, she then moved to a position as science aide, and finally took administrative roles coordinating standardized testing and special education. Colleagues remember Marcia’s smile, enthusiasm, and attention to detail. A pianist since childhood, she also organized and accompanied school musicals for many years, passing on her love of music to generations of young students.

Family was always Marcia’s priority. She was a confidant, advocate, and helper for anyone who needed her: parents, brothers, husband, and children. Her love and devotion never wavered and will not be forgotten.

Donations can be made to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (bbrfoundation.org) or Arlington Food Assistance Center (afac.org). in Marcia's memory.
