The Scribner News page 4
Charles N. Emery, one of the prominent pioneers of Kansas and Nebraska, died at Beatrice, Sunday, aged 62. He was one of the first agents of the Overland Stage company in this state, before the Union Pacific road was built, and took an active part in the stirring times of that period. Mr. Emery was one of the few survivors of the two Indian massacres at Thirty-Mile creek and Liberty Farm in August 1864, when many men, women and children were slaughtered. He was famous as an Indian fighter, understanding their methods of warfare, and piloting white troops to victory in numerous engagements. Among the older residents of Nebraska he is well known.
