John Beretta's story is one of success. His father died when he was 2 and at 11 he came to Texas from Arkansas with his mother and siblings. He worked and saved his money and opened his own business, a country store. He moved to Laredo when he was in his 20's and together with his partner, Col. Frost, the founder of Frost Bank, bought The Laredo National Bank. In Laredo he married Alice Beret and had two children, Judith Sydney Beretta and Alice May Beretta. He divorced Alice and in 1896 he married Sallie Mills Ward. Together they had a son, John Ward Beretta who became a graduate from MIT and later followed in his fathers footsteps becoming the President of the First National Bank in San Antonio.
John King Beretta was known as the Dean of Texas Bankers. He lived a long and active life and saw the crude beginning of many business and banking enterprises rise to towering institutions.
