Idaho Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 42nd United States Secretary of the Interior during the Administration of President Jimmy Carter from 1977 until 1981. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Idaho as the 26th (1971 to 1977) and 28th (1987 to 1995) Governor. After attending Oregon State University, he served with the United States Navy during the Korean War and following his return home, he held the occupations of lumberjack and a sawmill manager. He initiated his career in the political arena when he was elected to the Idaho State Senate in 1960. During his two terms as Governor, he was a strong proponent of environmental issues and preservation. He increased funding for education and battled the federal government to remove nuclear waste from Idaho. During his tenure as the Secretary of the Interior, he continued to prioritize efforts on the environment and was a voice for the nation's farmers. He died from lung cancer.
