Obituary

Hilda Jean Wood Freeman, 90, of Cullman, died peacefully at her home after a long illness, surrounded by family and friends on Aug. 23, 2017.

Hilda was many things--dedicated wife, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, entrepreneur, dedicated church member. She and her husband, Chester had a love story that began before World War II, and lasted through a marriage of almost 67 years.

Her varied career included beautician, retail associate at Watson's and Patrick's Shoe Store, and the peak of her career was her successful business, the House of Shoes, where she went to great strides to find the right pair of shoes for hard-to-fit feet.

Her main vocation was that of homemaker and caring for her family. Her Sunday lunches were treasured by the family until just a few years ago.

St. Andrew's United Methodist Church held a special place in her heart for 65 years during which she used her decorating talents on the Parsonage Committee and church upkeep, her green thumb towards the church landscaping, and serving on the Building Committees for two separate additions to St. Andrew's.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Freeman; parents, Boss and Loice Wood; and granddaughter, Amy Freeman Williams.

She is survived by her sister, Mary (Don) Strandlund; brother, Jim Wood; daughter, Carolyn (Bill) Peinhardt; son, Phil (Patti) Freeman; grandchildren, Clint (Anne) Peinhardt, Lanie (Jeb) Williamson, Rachel (Wesley) Dawsey, Meredith (Jeff) Middlebrooks; honorary grandchild, Allan (Stella) Chiunda; great-grandchildren, Ava and Lily Peinhardt, Clay and Maggie Williams, May, Cy and Miles Dawsey, Drew and Lucy Williamson, Eliza and Thomas Middlebrooks; and honorary great-grandchildren, Daniel and Farai Chiunda.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Moss Service Funeral Home. On Saturday, viewing will be from 3 to 4 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, followed by a 4 p.m. funeral service with graveside service at Cullman City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 615 Main Avenue SW, Cullman, AL 35055.

Arrangements under the direction of Moss-Service Funeral Home, Cullman, Alabama.
