Alice Adelaide BoydBIRMINGHAM | Eugene Alexander Bromberg of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Monday, December 15, 2003. Born December 8, 1930, in Birmingham, he attended Lakeview School and Ramsay High School, was a member of Alpha Sigma Delta fraternity, and was graduated from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a champion wrestler on that school’s varsity squad. He attended the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the varsity track team. At the University of Alabama, where he received a B.A. degree, he was President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon completion of the University’s ROTC program, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He married Lucy Joyce Keenon on April 28, 1954. On their honeymoon, he was called to serve two years of active duty. He returned to Bromberg and Company in diamond jewelry management, was a member of the American Gem Society and retired as Chairman of the Board of Bromberg and Company in 1998. A member of The Country Club of Birmingham, he was an active member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham for 40 years and served on its Board of Directors. He had sponsored an Interact Club at John Carroll Catholic High School. A member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, he served on the Parish Council and as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist to the sick, and in the Holy Name Society. He worked on the Vietnamese Resettlement Committee of the church for several years, and on the Board of Directors of Gateway. He was a member of the Beaux Arts Krewe and, for some years, the Inland Lake Association, and served on the Steering Committee of the Fine Arts Committee of the University of Alabama.

Mr. Bromberg is survived by his wife, Joyce Keenon Bromberg, and by their seven children, Elizabeth Boyd Bromberg Sullivan (and husband Brian Bruce Sullivan), William Gregory Bromberg II (and wife Stacy Coats Bromberg) of Montgomery, Mary Evelyn Bromberg McKee (and husband Dr. David Smyth McKee, Jr.), John Keenon Bromberg (and wife Elizabeth Waller Bromberg), Gene Marshall Bromberg (and wife Leigh Leacy Bromberg), Katherine Alice Bromberg Sprain (and husband Robert Henry Sprain, Jr.), and Joyce Buford “Buffy” Bromberg Allen (and husband David Allen, Jr.).

Mr. Bromberg is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Elizabeth Boyd Sullivan, Brian Bruce Sullivan, Jr., Charles Keenon Sullivan, Caroline Christian Bromberg, William Gregory Bromberg III, Alice Adelaide Bromberg, David Smyth McKee III, William Andrew McKee, John Austin Hay McKee, Elizabeth Taliaferro Bromberg, John Keenon Bromberg, Jr., Elizabeth Leacy Bromberg, Gene Marshall Bromberg, Jr., Katherine Theresa Sprain, Lucy Josephine Sprain, Mary Evelyn Sprain, Marguerite Alice Sprain, and Eugenie Joyce Allen.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, on Xavier Circle off of Montclair Road in Mountain Brook, followed by interment at Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital, Palliative Care Program, 806 St. Vincent’s Drive, Birmingham, AL 35205.

Services will be under the direction of Ridout’s Valley Chapel (205) 879-3401 in Homewood.
