John Edmund Gustafson, 78, of Galesburg, died at 9:32 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.

John was born November 3, 1938 in Moline, the son of John Clarence and Margaret Marie Lindstrom Gustafson. He is survived by four brothers, Sam Gustafson of Raleigh, NC, David (Helen) Gustafson of Marietta, GA, Tom (Marty) Gustafson of Gulfport, MS, and James Gustafson of Moline; and one sister, Jo Ann Gustafson of Ft. Madison, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents.

John joined the US Navy Reserves at the age of 16 and enlisted in the US Army in 1960. He was discharged on November 20, 1969, when he accepted an appointment as a Warrant Officer. After retirement from the US Army, John worked for the railroad. His working career spanned 44 years.

John enjoyed volunteering at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg. He was also a member of the tractor club where he met many close friends. John also helped feed the hungry with his sister, Jo Ann in Ft. Madison, IA.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2017 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center Auxiliary.
