Ed attended country schools near Rockville and Boelus, Nebraska and graduated from Mason City High in 1955. He joined the Army in December 1956, spending most of his time in Germany. He was honorably discharged in December 1958 with the rank of SP4 (Acting Sergeant).

He married Rosemary Perry on September 21, 1959 in Sidney, Nebraska. To this union three sons were born.

Ed worked in retail most of his life. The couple moved to Mitchell in 1976 where Ed worked for Lockwoods, Shaver Potato, and most recently for Dollar General in Mitchell. He loved his job there, but mostly enjoyed the people. Ed was a volunteer for the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department since moving to Mitchell and was still an honorary member for a total of 36 years. He enjoyed his work, his wonderful friends of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, fishing at Lake Minatare, and his visits to Eastern Nebraska to spend time with his family. His greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons & daughter-in-laws, Rick and Diana of Scottsbluff, Randy & Tammy of Gering; grandchildren, Brandon of Lincoln, Zac of Kearney, Garrett of Scottsbluff, Kyle of Gering, and Haley of Gering, two brothers, and two sisters.

Preceding him in death were his wife Rosemary, parents, youngest son Ronnie, one brother, and one sister.
