Malinda Elizabeth (Linda) Burkhardt, of rural Johnsonville, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Sheboygan Hospice Care, three days before her 98th birthday.
Malinda was born May 31, 1916 to the late Grover and Emma (Rautmann) Fischer at their home near Johnsonville, WI. Linda attended Pinehurst School.
On Feb. 8, 1934, Linda was united in marriage to Paul J. Burkhardt at Saron Church. They lived in Sheboygan County most of their lives, enjoying farming and dancing!
In 1952 they moved to School Hill as owners/operators of Burkhardt's Bar & Dance Hall. Later they moved back to the Johnsonville area. During these years Paul & Linda worked with Saron Youth Fellowship volleyball team. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the spring of 1984. Paul passed away in December of that year.
Malinda lived at home with her son, Ronald, until the day before her death, when she needed hospice care. Together, Ron and Mom attended many church dinners, chili suppers & other events. Mom enjoyed gardening and raising fabulous flowers around the house, both inside and out! Many gardens and tables benefited by the food and flowers she shared with friends and family! She loved her many pets over the years and especially cats Amie and Jamie, who were her companions for the last 18 years of her life. Of course, her children and extended family were loved most, and she could tell you the exact birthdate and anniversary dates for all her kinfolk!
Three hip operations slowed her down a bit but Mom kept her sense of humor and constant cheerful smile. In recent years she used a wheel chair, yet her mind was always sharp as a tack. Son, Ron, was her devoted caregiver and helper through the day she passed away. Mom had a strong spirit and faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A lifelong member of Saron UCC, her oft-repeated motto was "better days ahead".
Survivors include: Son Ron, at home; Son Paul Jr. & family, Sun Prairie, WI; Daughter Pat Karstaedt & family, Kiel, WI; Daughter Donna (Arlyn) Retlich, Kiel. Malinda is survived by 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren in Sun Prairie, Kiel and Green Bay areas. Linda also has two special loving nieces, Gladys Bitter & Gail Federwisch, near home. She is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, extended family.
Malinda was preceded in death by her husband Paul; four siblings: Carita Miske, Pete Fischer, Rose Nysse Roehrborn & Emmie Fischer; also son-in-law, Wilbert Karstaedt and grandson, Randy Karstaedt; son-in-law Sgt. Wayne Truttmann and grandson James Truttmann; and daughter-in-law Patricia Burkhardt.
A private family service was held at Jens Family Funeral Home on May 31, with Rev. Kim Henning officiating. Burial will be at the family gravesite at Saron UCC.
