William Russell Midlam, 78, of Lancaster, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at his residence.

Russ was a former superintendent of Fairfield Union Schools and was a graduate of Ohio State and Miami universities.

He was a former football coach from 1950 to 1956, compiling a record of 43-10-6. He coached basketball from 1957 to 1962 and led the team to three Hamilton County League championships. He was athletic director of Colerain and then moved to Clermont County, where he was high school principal at Bethel-Tate High School. Russ was the first coach inducted into the Hall of Fame at Colerain High School, Cincinnati.

Russ attended Ebenezer Baptist Church, Logan, was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

He was a veteran of World War II and a charter member of the World War II Memorial.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Midlam; son and daughter-in-law, Michael S. and Tammy Midlam of Mount Orab; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi A. and John Register of Bradenton, Fla.; grandchildren Russell E. Midlam and Dane Register; step-son and wife, David and Joyce Sapp of Newark; step-grandchildren, Michael, Cynthia and Eric; his mother Geneva Hoopman of Lancaster; brother and sister-in-law, Paul J. and Barbara J. Midlam of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul S. Midlam.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Lancaster, with the Rev. Steven Hubbard officiating.

Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Marion Cemetery, with military services graveside.
