According to the MACR (Missing Air Crew Report), William J Suber was assigned to the Army Air Corps and eventually served as a tail gunner on a B-17G (serial # 42-31397).
Sgt Suber served with the 15th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group, 353rd Bomb Squadron in Lucera Italy. The crew of nine left on a bombing mission to Germany on 25 Feb 1944. Sadly their plane was severely damaged by enemy fire. The crew members, that were able, bailed out. The pilot, 1st Lt Joseph A Hurley of Brooklyn; the co-pilot 2nd Lt William J Mills; the lower turret gunner, S/Sgt William Bothwell; and tail gunner Sgt William J Suber perished from wounds during the air battle or when the plane crashed and exploded.
