Jacob was born 7 December 1751 and christened on 22 December 1751 in Bethel Township, Lancaster Co. (now Lebanon Co.), Pennsylvania, son of Gottfried Baumgartner (aka Godfrey Bumgardner) and Anna Katerina Kiefer Baumgartner/Bumgardner. He died about August 1816 in Springfield Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio.

He married Anna Christina Feeser about 1776 in Petersburg, York Co. (now Littletown, Adams Co.), Pennsylvania, daughter of Jacob Feeser and Anna Maria Link Feeser. They were parents of a possible nine children: Mary Elizabeth, Anna, Johannes, Margaretha Barbara. Catherine, Johann Jacob III, Susan, George, and Nicholas.

Jacob was listed in the first Federal census and in the tax roles of York Co., PA in 1785. He is listed as being in Germany Township, a Blacksmith, 2 lots, 1 House, 2 Outhouses, 2 Horned Cattle, 4 Sheep, 4 Inhabitants; Valuation 100.12 pounds, Tax 2 pounds. His wife died before 1799 in PA. Jacob went to Springfield Twp. while it was still part of Fairfield Co. in 1799 (now in Muskington Co., Ohio), where several of his married children also settled.

His will was probated 29 August 1816 in Mustington Co., Ohio. It is believed he was interred in the family cemetery on the property of his married daughter Jacob and Mary Elizabeth Reese. In the early 1920s the graves that could be identified were moved to Woodland Cemetery in Zanesville. Those whose markers did not survive remain there and Jacob's was one, if buried there.
