Peter J. Wagner, age 72, a Valders resident, died Friday morning, October 31, 2014 at Manitowoc Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Peter was born November 30, 1941 in St. Nazianz, son of the late Herbert and Louise (Birschbach) Wagner. He graduated from Valders High School and then received a B.S. Degree in Forestry from the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On May 31, 1971 he married the former Ellen Schambureck at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Whitelaw. He was employed with the U.S. Forest Service and spent most of his career in Oregon at the Mount Hood National Forest and in Wisconsin at the Chequamegon National Forest. Upon retiring in 1994 Peter ran his own Forestry Consulting firm until 2006.

Peter loved being in the woods, especially hiking and bird watching with his family. He enjoyed writing his column in the Valders Journal on nature. He also enjoyed wood carving and reading.

Survivors include his wife: Ellen, Valders; one daughter: Kelley Wagner, Racine; two sons and daughters-in-law: Kevin and Tara Wagner, Wauwatosa; Paul and Kat Wagner, Madison; three grandchildren: Douglas, Jacob, Lizzie; brothers and sisters: Janet Schuh, Albuquerque, NM; Mabel Nichols, Cottage Grove, MN; Mary and Jerry Steffen, Green Bay; Tony and Sharon Wagner, FL; Paul and Carol Wagner, Valders; Mike Wagner and Karen Clancy, Sedona, AZ; Carol and John Brodtke, Whitelaw; and one brother-in-law: Norbie Schuh, Valders. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by one brother: Joe Wagner, one niece: Jennifer Brodtke, and one brother-in-law: Terry Nichols.

Funeral services will be held 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Patrick Nelson, S.D.S. Burial will be at the church cemetery on Tuesday. Military Honors will be accorded by the Wagner Ebeble Sukowaty Post 477.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Gregory Catholic Church from 3:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m.
