Smith Dunlap, Jr. was the son of Smith Dunlap and Eleanor Lane Dunlap. He married Lovina M. (maiden name unknown), probably in Oswego County, New York. Their names were found together in the Oswego Deed Indexes in 1837. By 1840, they were found in Gross Point, Cook County, Illinois. They started for Oregon in May of 1847. Unfortunately, Smith was killed by accidental discharge of his own rifle while on the Oregon Trail. He was buried along the Platte River. His wife and six children continued on to Oregon.
