An author in her own right and Josephina Clayton, she had gone to France aged 15 to learn the language. She married Dr Paul Bert, later Professor of Physiology at the Sorbonne, a Minister of Education and Worship in the French Government and Resident-General in Annam and Tonkin, where he died in 1886.
