Marlene Fay Popenoe Belieu-Grassl passed away Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, at Life Care Center, due to complications of a stroke she suffered in March.

Marlene was born July 25, 1934, at Seattle to John W. and Thelma May Popenoe. She attended school at Maple Valley, Wash., until moving to Goldendale, Wash., during her junior year. She graduated high school there in 1952.

Marlene married Arthur W. Belieu on Aug. 21, 1952, at Vancouver, Wash. She lived at Goldendale until Art returned from the U.S. Army. They moved to Klickitat, Wash., for work, then back to Goldendale. They moved to Clarkston in the winter of 1960, residing there until 1976, when they moved to Asotin. Art passed away in November 1987.

Marlene worked at Highland Market in 1962, Sharp's Burger Ranch for 11 years, then Asotin School District as cook and supervisor, retiring after 20 years. She really enjoyed working with the children and still remembered many of them. Also, during this time, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 and a registered dietitian degree in 1995 and worked as an Avon lady.

Marlene married Jerry Grassl in 2003 and moved to Uniontown. She worked at the local library briefly, enjoyed activities through church and made many friends in the area. They enjoyed traveling for several years and then, as she said, "settled in to watch the wheat grow."

Marlene is survived by her husband, Jerry Grassl of Uniontown; brother Andrew Popenoe of Fairfield, Calif.; son Donald Belieu of Lewiston; daughter Debbie Hovey of Clarkston; granddaughter Pam Costa (Jeff); great-grandchildren Justin, Jassmyn, Jarrett and Geoffrey; great-great-grandson Brantley; granddaughter Amber Hovey; great-granddaughter Ashlynn McConnell; daughter Dena Bell (Clarence) of Ladson, S.C.; and granddaughter Jennifer Bell. She was preceded in death by sons Vernon, in 1960, and Dale, in 2016; brother Jack; and sister Mildred McGahey. She also left behind many extended family members, friends and a very special longtime friend, Carol Bower.

Family thanks the staff at Prestige Care of Clarkston and Life Care Center of Lewiston for their care of Marlene.

Cremation has occurred and burial will be at Vineland Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Merchant Funeral Home, 1000 Seventh St., Clarkston.
