William Edward Thomas was the son of Joe (or Joseph Jobe) Thomas of Madison Co., VA and Cassandra Hudson of Amherst Co., VA. He married Averilla P Campbell, the daughter of David Edward Campbell and Eliza Ann Mays, in 1872.

He served in CSA in Company I, called the "Amherst Rough and Readies," 49th Virginia Infantry. On 2 Mar 1862, he first enlisted. Nine months later, in 1862, between 11-15 of December, he was wounded at the bloody battle in Fredericksburg. On 4 Aug 1863, he was on "special detail, arresting deserters, at home in Amherst County, VA, During 5-7 Feb 1865, he was wounded in the Siege of Petersburg in Dinwiddie County, VA, at Hatcher's Run. Days later on 9 Feb, a finger on his left hand was amputated at the Richmond Hospital.

On the 1860 Arrington Depot P.O., Nelson, Virginia census, I found Kafsandria Thomas, 38; William E Thomas, 16; Joseph Thomas, 14; SALLY A Thomas, 10 and Allis Thomas, 6, all born in Amherst Co., VA.

William E Thomas was the son of "Joe" Thomas and Casanda Hudson and the husband of Avenilla Thomas. He was born on 9 Oct 1843 in Amherst Co., VA. and died on 24 Nov 1927 in Amherst Co., VA. He was a farmer. The informant was Manuel Thomas and he was buried a the "Old Home Place" on 26 Nov 1927. The cause was prostatitis and cystitis. VA Certificate of Death #23809.

"William Edward Thomas was born 9 Oct 1843 in Amherst County to Job Thomas (1820), native of Madison County and Cassandra Hudson (1820-1899). Other children were Joseph (1844) Settled in Colorado, Sally (1846) married Pomp Beard, and Alice (1850) married Scott Parsons. Many of these are buried in the family cemetery in Turkey Mountain, west of Clifford." His detailed bio was submitted by Robert H Thomas and published in the Amherst County Virginia Heritage Book, 2000, by S E Grose Publisher, p 234-235. It also has a photo of him in his later years.

CO I 49 VA INF REGT. The site also states: "There are several homemade soapstone grave markers and possibly one or more unmarked gravesites. Established by W.E. Thomas."
