Charles Alvin Lewis, age 83 of Monroe, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 10:52 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15th in his home. He had been seriously ill for six weeks.

Born May 10, 1934 in Middlesboro, Kentucky, he was the son of Reverend George and Lizzie (Mason) Lewis.

Charles (also known to many as Alvin) married Joyce D. Jennings on August 16, 1952 in Monroe and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised two children, Rickey Lewis of Monroe and Pamela (Cliff) Reuther of Temperance.

Charles was employed by Ford Motor Company from 1952 to 1958. They moved to California in 1958 where he was employed as Acceptance Data Analyst with North American Rockwell Corp., Space Division. He and his teammates were responsible for the latest data configurations for the Apollo and the second stage Saturn V rockets. They returned to Monroe in 1969 where he was employed by Ford Motor Company for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Afterward, he worked part-time for seven years at Mercy Memorial Hospital as a technician in their Home Care Respiratory Department.

Having a great love of gospel music, he sang and played piano for a southern gospel quartet, “Revelation One” for 22 years. They had the honor to minister in Guyana, South Africa at their annual camp meeting. They also toured and sang in Barbados, West Indies and traveled throughout many of the states ministering in word and music for many years.

Alvin loved to play golf for over 70 years with many friends and his brothers. He could still shoot his age up till he was about 80. In 2013, he shot his first and only hole-in-one at the age of 79.

In addition to his wife and two children, Charles is survived by three brothers, Dewey (Cecil) Lewis and Mitchell (Pat) Lewis of Monroe, and Cecil (Betty) Lewis of The Villages, Florida; a sister, Hazel Hatfield of Angola, Indiana; sister-in-law, Cecilia Lewis of Thomaston, Georgia; seven grandchildren: Jason (Shannon) Lewis, Brian Lewis, Krista (Brett) Jandasek, Eric (Jessica) Lewis, Amanda (Greg) Starr, Amy Hall, and Alyssa Hall; 19 great-grandchildren: Curtis, Cole, Bella, Johan, Patrick, Brian, Willow, Alexis, Christian, Brock, Brandon, Darren, Matthew, Cheyenne, Gregory, Allen, Alyssa, Benji, and Bryce; and one great-great-grandchild, Ayvah.
