John Stephen Slorp was born on 5 Dec 1936 in Hartford, Connecticut. After completion of high school, he attended Ocean College (Daly City, California) in 1956, Taft College (Kern County, California), in 1961 and the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) (Oakland, California) where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting (1963) and Master of Fine Arts in painting (1965). At CCAC, John met a fellow art student, Carolyne Marie Harader (b 1941, d 2008), and they married in Los Angeles on 17 Jun 1962. He was 25, and she was 21. The couple had no children, and the marriage ended in divorce in the early 1980s. From 1965 to 1982, John was a member of the faculty of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, where he assumed a number of leadership roles including Chairperson of the MICA Foundation Studies program. From 1982 to 1990, John served as President of the Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, and he served on a number of advisory committees in Memphis, including the Memphis Design Center, Opera Memphis, the Hotel Advisory Committee and the Memphis Brooks Museum. He also became a frequent keynote speaker. From 1990 to 2002, he served as President of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and he continued his considerable involvement as keynote speaker and active participant on numerous advisory committees. He retired from the Presidency in 2002, but held the position of Professor Emeritus with special interests in painting, calligraphy and computer graphics. John passed away on 21 May 2011 in Madison, Lake County, South Dakota. He was 74.
