Elizabeth Cortlandt Smith was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Benjamin Mosby Smith, D. D. and Mary Moore Morrison and the granddaughter of Rev. James Morrison and Frances Brown. Fanny was the granddaughter of Mary Moore, the Indian "Captive of Abb's Valley." She married Rev. John Alexander Preston on 17 Jul 1878 at her father's home in "Union Seminary, VA." (Emma Siggins White's book, Genealogy of the descendants of John Walker of Wigton...) Her marriage record says it was in Prince Edward, VA and she was born in Staunton, VA and he was born in Lexington, VA.


They had 3 Preston sons:

Thomas Lewis, 19 Nov 1891 - died before 2 Jun 1900 census


On the 1 Jun 1880 Hampden, Prince Edward, Virginia census, I found minister of the gospel JOHN Preston, 22 or 27 and wife Couirtlant Preston, 26, plus 3 black servants and their daughter, all Virginia born.


Her husband John died 14 Sep 1896, leaving her a widow with 2 sons.


On the 2 Jun 1900 Lexington, Virginia census, I found widow Elisabeth C Preston, 46, Oct 1853, had 3 kids, 2 living ; sons, both at school: Randolph C Preston, 19, Jun 1880 and Benjaman Preston, 14, Jan 1886, all Virginia born.


Mrs. C. S. Preston. (Special Dispatch to The Times) Lexington, VA., Dec. 26. - The remains of Mrs. Courtlandt Smith Preston arrived here to-night from near Baltimore, where she died Wednesday morning. The funeral will take lace Friday morning from the Presbyterian Church and interment will be made i the Lexington Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Thornton Whaling officiated. Mrs. Preston was the widow of Dr. John A. Preston, a Presbyterian minister, who died here about five years ago. His last pastorate was at Asheville, N. C. She was a daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Benjamin M. Smith for many years professor in the Union Theological Seminary, now of Richmond. Her age was about forty-five years. She is survived by two boys, E. R. and B. S. Preston; also by her mother, three sisters and one brother - Mrs. Addison Hogue of Lexington; Mrs. J. W. Rosebro, of Fredericksburg; Mrs. A. J. McKelway, of Charlotte, N.C., and Dr. B. M. She shares her standing gravestone with her husband and to the right of her gravestone, is son Benjamin's marker.
