15th Governor of Iowa. He was born one of three children born to Hiram W. Jackson and Marian D. Jenks Jackson in Arcade, New York. The family later moved to China, New York, when he was six. He was educated locally and attended the Arcade Academy in Arcade, New York, and later moved to Ames, Iowa, where he attended the prestigious Iowa Agricultural College (later Iowa State University) for three years beginning in 1867. He then studied law at the University of Iowa Law School in Iowa City, Iowa, and graduated from there in 1875. He was admitted to that bar that same year. On November 7, 1877, he married Anna F. Brock Jackson in Madison, Iowa, and the couple would have four children together (Graydon Brock Jackson was born in 1879, Ernest Andrew Jackson was born in 1884, Frank Hiram Jackson was born in 1884, and Lewis Stoddard Jackson was born in 1891). The family lived in Independence, Iowa, where he began his practice of law and then they moved to Greene, Iowa, where he furthered his practice of law when he succeeded J.W. Gilger in July of 1880. He then entered politics and served as the Assistant Adjutant General of the National Guard for the State of Iowa during the early 1880s. He then served as the Secretary of State Iowa from 1885 to 1891. He then decided to run for the office of Governor of Iowa. He won the Republican gubernatorial election beating out the incumbent nomination Candidate Horace Boies who had previously served as the 14th Governor of Iowa. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served as the Governor of Iowa from January 11, 1894, to January 16, 1896. While serving as the Governor of Iowa he worked towards securing additional funding for the management of state agencies and also endorsed controlling the sale of liquor products through a local option bill. He did not seek reelection following his two-year term and retired from politics shortly thereafter. After his term as Governor of Iowa expired on January 16, 1896, he was succeeded in office by Francis Marion Drake. He resumed his practice of law after his political career and also engaged in the insurance business. He also helped to establish and was President of the Royal Union Life Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa. He lived in Des Moines, Iowa, for over twenty years and then retired to Redlands, California, in 1924. He passed away from the infirmities of advanced age on November 16, 1938, at the age of 84, in Redlands, California, where he had lived for fourteen years. At his death, he and his wife had been married for sixty-one years. His funeral was held at the Dow & Fitzsimmons Chapel in Redlands, California, and he was laid to rest in the Hillside Cemetery in that city. His wife Anna passed on October 16, 1940, and she was buried with her husband.
