On May 4, 1927, Paul Joseph Herman, Sr., was born at home in the Badlands north of Kyle, SD to Jake Herman and Alice Herman (Janis). Paul peacefully passed away on September 20, 2017, at his home in No Flesh, SD.

In his childhood, Paul grew up in the Gunnery Range north of Kyle, SD, and attended school at Kyle Day School and later Holy Rosary Mission. While in third grade, in recognition of his gifted mind, he traveled with his Jesuit teachers to New York City to raise funds for his school by dancing to traditional Lakota songs at the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. While he was a teenager, the United States Government declared eminent domain on the land Paul’s family lived on so the land could be used as a gunnery range by the U.S. Airforce. His family relocated to the No Flesh Community.

In 1949, he met Pearl Herman (Bettelyoun) and they were married a year later.

Paul served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and utilized his talents working many jobs in his early professional career. He and Pearl lived in several locations in the Black Hills while he pursued work in construction, firefighting, and a ranch hand. For a period of time, Paul operated his own cattle ranch in the No Flesh Community. In 1967, he began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pine Ridge, SD and retired from that job in 1994.

Paul was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He had a great passion for going to the dog races in Rapid City, SD and Loveland, Co – often taking his children and grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a keen understanding of history, which he enjoyed sharing with his family. Paul also enjoyed taking trips to Prairie Wind Casino or East Wind Casino with Pearl, his spouse of 65 years. Each summer, Paul planted a large garden at his home in No Flesh and he enjoyed sharing his crops with family. He was also known for baking bread and cinnamon rolls.

Paul is preceded by his father Jake Herman and mother Alice Herman; sister Grace Herman; brother Jacob “Sonny” Herman, wife Pearl Herman, and grandsons Leo Herman, Jr., and Jake Herman.
