Prof. Jacob H. Adler, 83, died at 6 PM Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Westminster Village, where he had been a resident since 1995. Born March 26, 1919, at Evansville, he was the son of Hiram and Jessica Oberndorfer Adler.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from University of Florida, Gainesville, and his PhD from Harvard University. He married Emily Rowe on June 1, 1952, at Lexington, KY; she died Sept. 20, 1978.

Dr. Adler was in the Army during World War II in India. He was a professor in the English department of the University of Kentucky from 1949 to 1969. He became head of that department in 1959 and served in that position until he came to Purdue University in 1969. He was head of the English department at Purdue from 1969 to 1979, and a professor of English from 1969 to 1989.

He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette, the Modern Language Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English. He had traveled to 70 countries and all 50 states.

Surviving are a son, James R. Adler (wife Emily Scudder) of Cambridge, MA; and a daughter, Jennifer A. Stockment (husband David) of Miami, FL. There are no services planned.
