Elizabeth was born in Stahl, Russia. She came to the United States in 1913 through Ellis Island with her family at the age of five. She was better known to everyone she met as "grandma". She lived life through the many children around her. She worked at Roeding Fig Packing Company for more than 40 years. At the same time, she ran the ranch with her husband, August Scharton Jr., and raised their three children; Vivian, Betty Jean and Earl. When her family grew and she became a grandma in 1948, she helped raise another generation. Grandma was a very strong person. She faced a lot of hardships in her life. In 1967, she lost her daughter, Betty Jean "Jeannie" Mattos, in an automobile accident. Jeannie left behind eight children. Grandma and Grandpa became parents again to their youngest grandson Nathan who was two months old. She lost her husband of 48 years in 1974. Grandma passed away at the age of 96 in her home in Easton where she lived for the past 69 years. Grandma will best be remembered for her stubbornness, her beautiful rose garden and her unconditional love.
