Dorothy Byars Smith, the wife of Arthur Smith, world renowned music composer-entertainer, passed away peacefully of complications from pneumonia under the abiding care of Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care in Charlotte, NC surrounded by family members at her bedside. She was 97. She was a devout Christian, Sunday School teacher for 63 years. Without a doubt she left this earth to be welcomed by her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to enjoy everlasting life. Anyone who was ingratiated by her presence left the room with a smile on their face. Her smile, her loving way, and perpetual sweet nature is forever implanted in the minds of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have become acquainted. She was born in Charlotte, NC. She contributed greatly to the fabric of the Queen City. The daughter of Robert Harrison and Dovie Rains Byars, she met her husband to be and high school sweetheart, Arthur Smith, in Kershaw, SC where her father was an executive with Springs Mills. They were married April 12, 1941. The couple lived in Spartanburg, SC after their wedding where he was a broadcaster-entertainer on WSPA. They moved to Charlotte in 1943 where her husband was affiliated with WBT and later WBTV with the advent of
television. The couple raised their 3 children in Charlotte - Reggie, Connie and Clay. Her husband preceded her on April 3, 2014. On April 12, 2014 they would have celebrated 73 years of marriage. Their chosen life verse was Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all things shall be added unto you.” She was a fabulous cook whose southern cooking recipes were published in Southern Living, Knight-Ridder Newspapers, and numerous compilations of Celebrity Wives Recipes. She prepared meals to the delight of her family, friends, celebrities and politicians. She took pride in hosting her annual and delectable Christmas Party in their home for her Sunday School Class, friends and fellow church members. She was a celebrated flower arranger. She earned a Masters Degree from Ikenobo School of Ikebana. Her arrangements were perennial favorites in flower and garden shows in the Carolinas. She was awarded too many Blue Ribbons and Best of Show awards to count. As multi-talented a lady as she was, her favorite activity was spending time with her grandchildren. She was perpetually involved in church and civic work. Her past and present affiliations included: Member, Calvary Church, Board Member and Secretary of North Carolina Baptist Children’s Home; Chairman, Women’s Missionary Union; First Chairman and Area Representative, Christian Women’s Club; Founder and first Chairman of Sardiswood Garden Club, Board Member - Alexander Children’s Home, Florence Crittenton Services, Council of Garden Clubs. She believed, “Christians should exercise vigorously their responsibilities to participate in the political process by registering to vote, educating themselves about the issues, volunteering and voting according to their Biblical beliefs, convictions, and values.” In addition to her husband Arthur Smith, she was preceded by her 1st son, Arthur Reginald Smith and 3 siblings: Paul Byars of Columbia, SC, Jack Byars of Greensboro and Reedy Moreland of Kershaw, SC.
