Born in Evanston Illinois to Methodist minister Joseph Hart Alling and his wife Jennie Munger. The youngest of many children he was a bit of a surprise when he was born as the family was not looking to grow any larger. Harold Alling followed his brother Claude and was educated at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, graduating with a degree in Fire Safety Engineering in 1911. He served with the American field service in WWI in 1917, and was living in Evanston, IL at the time of his service. Harold and others with him were awarded the Croix De Guerre medal for their service. He was married to Edna Rose (Harris) moving to Pasadena, CA in the 1920s. Harold was employed as an insurance salesman and adjuster for the fire insurance industry for many years. Often brokering large deals with only a handshake, as he was a very reputable and kind man. Harold was a member of the Annadale Golf Club in Pasadena for many years and was proud of the fact that he was able to shoot his age into his senior years. He was a quiet man who enjoyed pets as he was not allowed to have them as a child. He had two daughters Dorothy and Sidney Alling.
