James Allison was an architect. He was born in Pittsburgh, where he apprenticed with a builder and was a draftsman. In 1903 he and his brother, David Clark Allison, started their architectural firm in Pittsburgh, then moved the firm to Los Angeles in 1910. The firm dissolved in 1942. He became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1918. He designed several churches, banks, schools, and other commercial buildings in Southern California.

He was married first to Stella Clark. He then married Mary Elizabeth, who predeceased him in 1947.
