Long-time rancher, he was one of the originators of the Sagebrush Rebellion fight for ranchers rights during the 1980s. He was also prominent for the court case Wayne Hage vs. the United States which dealt with grazing rights and vested interests in the land for which they paid the government for their use.

His first wife, Jean Nichols Hage, and mother of his five children, passed away in 1996. He married his second wife, Jean Chenoweth, in 1999. All three are buried in the Pine Creek Cemetery, on the ranch he loved so much.
